Jogged that path this afternoon. Gorgeous view of the river..and a rare angle for me, since I usually stick to the parking- lot side of that white fence. At one time, signs bearing names of great race horses ran the length of the path-Alsab..Bally Ache..Candy Spots (that one now resides in my brother's basement)- alphabetically arranged to mark each parking section.

But despite that area's history, I get more resonant vibes from the indoor paddock, which stands designated an historic landmark. Sometimes when I need a boost, I slip upstairs from my dungeon desk, take a seat in the nearly unchanged paddock, and imagine my dad stand over the railing as the horses circle below. It feels so real. I even wrote about those occasions in a blog entry entitled "the tickets."

That one came out fragile and inwardly focused. A much better and more comprehesive look at the place's history-and I mean long-ago history-was my first blog entry on Mnr's website, "Of Muskets and Movies."

Tx for posting. Your appreciation of the horse path struck a chord.

My question had absolutely nothing to do with rating race callers.

You said there were race tracks that didn't care about who their announcers are.

An unsolicited opinion on your part.

I simply asked you to share which race tracks you feel that way about.

Why would he answer this question? To severely limit his options next time out?

Internet forums tend to be full of unsolicited opinions.

As I said that's something I am quite content to keep to myself. Nothing more to say on the matter. Thanks all the same.

Peter Berry = Elite Level Racecaller - hope he is back at Mountaineer very soon indeed.

Track executive's want to run their track and not worry about any drama.

Especially from someone in the public eye like the announcer.

PA was partially right when he said these forums are guilty pleasure.

Not so much because the top guy's/gals read things themselves. But they do have people that keep an eye out and report any potential problems they may need to deal with.

Knowing the pulse of your customers is never a bad thing.

So true. I got a 6 month reprimand and a tongue lashing from my Superiors at MVR for posting here about the misidentified horse that ran in a filly race and won at 110-1 back in 2015. It could have been worse. A local news reporter called me for an interview. Luckily, I was golfing and the message went to voice mail and I never responded. https://www.dispatch.com/article/201...NEWS/312119688

Also a number of tracks do not seem to care about the standard of racecalling they offer. I just hope Mountaineer sees sense, rehires Peter, so he can do his excellent job without being separated or having to upheave his family.
Century is one of those companies who don't care, look at what is calling up at their Century Mile in Canada, could very well be the worst in all of North America.

Most companies have policies restricting what employees can post on social media and even forbidding them to be interviewed.

I have always exempted myself from these guidelines, but do VERY much know where the line is. That's just common sense and self preservation.

Some past owners of Mnr went to almost comical lengths in shushing those on the payroll. I can recall one instance when management called every employee together and issued a dire warning about "scurrilous whispers in the hallways" concerning an impending bankruptcy. The lives of our children were threatened should we spread or even pause to listen to such rubbish.

When I got back to my office, the very member of upper management who had admonished the payroll came on the noon news in a taped segment bemoaning the sad need to go belly up.

I somehow doubt a career can be helped much on social media, but the potential to tank one surely exists.

Re: The bolded part of the above quote.

As a horseplayer, as a lifelong fan of the sport, I'm hoping as a direct result of this thread:

A track exec at one of the major tracks is made aware that an elite level race caller is available and hires Peter Berry.
