Bailey retiring...

It sounds like it could be true this time. I wish that he'd stay through one more Saratoga meet.

"Sunshine Millions day will be his last day," Anderson said.

Think he'll get shut out that day?

Reminds me of Shoemaker losing his final race aboard Patchy Groundfog (and after they had even named the race for him -- "The Legend's Last Ride"). (By the way, who rode the winner in that race? Was it Bailey?)

I found the answer on Google. It was Eddie Delahoussaye aboard Exemplary Leader.

He should have retired after the Breeders Cup Day. Anderson doesn't seem to be getting all that many good mounts down at Gulfsteam. Plus, that is really a great jockey colony. Time to share the wealth and move on.

Interesting.

He strikes me as still seriously competitive. I wonder if this will stick. He's only 48.

Good for him. He has the opportunity to be an Ambassador for the Industry. He got out, unhurt, with his head on straight, a pocketful of money and a legendary reputation.

Best of luck to him.

All it would take is for him to find out he`s aboard a promising three year old, and retirement would be put on hold. He never turn down a chance at the triple crown races.

Hasn't this guy been saying he's gonna retire for something like the past 3 or 4 years?! Can't imagine this is the kind of game you want something like that on your mind while you're out doing your job. Especially the "get out in one piece" bit.

That's what I'm thinking. Why retire right now? Why not at the end of the Summer?

Two Summers ago I thought they Jerry Bailey Day and a Jerry Bailey Stakes (which he won on a 10-1) at Saratoga in anticipation of his retirement. Maybe this ESPN deal was finally to his liking.

He did come out with his book around the same time.

The thing that Crossed my mind last night as I thought about this is:

Why is he not running his Last race in NYC? I read into that.

He's at number 2, just a smidgen behind Day in all-time purse earnings( besides also missing hitting the magic number of 300 million). Think this is a sort of calculated and classy move to let him keep some thunder and glory?

Jerry Bailey an ambassador? Take away the "amb" and the last four letters and you got it right. He'll be like the one in The Ugly American.

He'll up to the big shots at the network and tell us every day how smart he is.
