To the best of my knowledge…
Code:
tTRK nSURF TURNS nDIST
GP D 1 5
GP D 1 5.5
GP D 1 6
GP D 1 6.5
GP D 1 7
GP D 1 7.5
GP D 1 8
GP D 2 9
GP D 2 9.5
GP D 2 10
GP T 1 5
GP T 2 7.5
GP T 2 8
GP T 2 8.5
GP T 2 9
GP T 2+ 11
GP T 2+ 11.5
GP T 2+ 12
Just a note starting this year GP is “ dividing” the turf course into 2 with a “ permanent” temp rail. For a track that has had more timing issues then all tracks combined it might be something to monitor.

FYI
There is only a 5 foot run up for a mile on the main (dirt) track. That's why you'll see quite a few 25 and change 1st quarters for that distance.

More training needed for the tractor driver. Did he think the race would finish on the "outer" turf course in race #3?

The timer starts 5 feet from the gate for the one mile distance on the main track at Gulfstream. Most PP's have the run up distances and rail positions if you get them on line. I use the DRF formulator.
For example at Del Mar the run up distance at one mile on the main track to the timer is 200 feet. It makes quite a difference if your trying to figure out the pace.

The timing of a race doesn't begin until they hit the timer beam and that beam can be anywhere from 5 ft. to 250 ft. from the starting gate before the timer starts.
With a normal run up it was more like 23 and 3/5.
The longer the run up the more likely they are to run a faster first quarter. The shorter the run up the more likely they are to run a slower first quarter. In other words if the run up today were 70 feet (distance from the gate to the timer) instead of 5 feet he would have been timed around 23 and change for the first quarter. It's like the difference between timing the first quarter from a standing start (when the gate opens) vs. a running start.

Here are the 8th race pp's for Gulfstream. You will see run up distances below each running line. Last year (February 28th of 2009) you will see that Quality Road ran a mile at Gulfstream and the run up distance is below that running line. It is 5 ft.

Still a huge difference.....45 vs 48.
Unless they timed the race with a calendar....again.
Or, the timer failed and the clocker said he went in 45 and 3, so they wrote down 48.

Why cant they just keep it the same?is it that big of a deal when capping the races?

They try to make picking winners as difficult as possible.
Sometimes it's just the configuration of each track. Some tracks are consistent and some aren't. I really don't know exactly why but CJ would probably have a better answer.
Tracks like Belmont move the run ups for the same distances during the day to make it even tougher. The new PP's with the run up distances help quite a bit. The turf run ups are even more tricky when they move the rails in and out. Having PP's with run ups and turf rail positions are a "must have".
It makes a huge difference when you're trying to figure out the pace of the races.
