Windows OS branding: what's in a name.
http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/m...-10-internally
Quote:
It may seem like an esoteric subject, but the recent rumors about Microsoft changing the version number of Windows 10 are true: In this release, the software giant will align the name of the product with the version number, the first time it's done so since the mid-1990s. And that could impact application and even web site compatibility in the new OS.
Which is of course the reason that Microsoft hasn't made this kind of change in so long.

A rose by any other name ... ?
And then there's the *nix mess. Some one explain that, please.

Microsoft seems to get right about every other time. XP good, Vista bad, Windows 7 good, Windows 8 bad, Windows 10 ?. I have had lot people tell me windows 8 is pretty good, but got a bad rep because of the switch away from the desktop.

There's a plethora of distros. What are the relative merits of each? How can a person make any kind of evaluation which one to use?

Many linux distributions can be run from a Live CD or DVD in order to 'try before you buy'.
Distrowatch has a listing of the top 100 linux distributions on the right hand side of this page
Once you download the package, you will have to burn the .iso to disk. If you use Roxio be sure you choose 'BURN Disk Image' and NOT 'Data Disk'.
Once the disk has been burnt, you will need to reset your computer's BIOS to boot from your CD or DVD. This usually involves hitting the [ESC] or other key as your computer boots up the black screen. You will have to watch the screen during boot to see the specific key to press as it could also be one of the Function Keys [F1] thru [F12].
The BIOS config will be an old DOS based window where you will have to search for the Boot Order. Set it to boot to your CD or DVD FIRST and Hard Disk Second. Don't forget to save the changes usually by pressing F10.
Pop in your LINUX Live Cd and within minutes you can be test driving the distribution of your choice. Most Live Disks have the option to install if you really like it. If you don't like the Distro, just log off and remove the Disk from the Tray. Your computer will remain unchanged.
I did not like UBUNTU and would likely start with test driving Linux Mint or PCLinuxOS.
I prefer Windows style simple desktops so I suggest downloading these distributions that use the LXDE, Mate or XFCE desktops.

Thanks for the reply.
There's not enough time in a day, week or month to download, burn, install, boot then evaluate even a fraction of the different distros. And, in the end, you won't be able say from the limited experience what are the relative merits of each.
Too many cooks in the kitchen.

You don't have to install an open-source "live" OS to run it -- the whole point of it being live is that it runs directly from a CD/DVD, USB, SD, external HD, etc.
At any rate, I never understood why some people consider choice to be a detriment, but, for anyone with such notions, just use Linux Mint KDE.
Problem solved.

It is exactly the same situation when evaluating any variant of Windows or OSX, except with the extra hardship that there are no free nor live versions of Windows nor OSX -- you gotta pay and then do a full install of the OS and additional software when evaluating a proprietary OS!

Nope. Just a lot of restaurants from which to choose.
By the way, Linux Mint consistently gets "5-star reviews."

Linux may be find for geeks, but the average Joe like me will have problems with it. My old senior apt complex had a bunch of old donated computers that had been wiped clean and had Linux and Firefox on them. I was not impressed. Neither was the management, because they were being replaced one by one by old donated computers that had some version of Windows on them.

Not really.
Newbie versions of Linux are so easy that my mother installed it on her computer by herself when she was 82-years-old. It is doubtful that she would have been able to install a version of Windows on her own.
Furthermore, millions of "average Joes" around the world are using a Linux distro on their desktop right now and have been doing so for years.
However, the real clincher comes when one asks this simple question: How many "average Joes" switch to Windows on their phones because they have problems with Android (Linux)? Not very many. Android Linux dominates the smart phone market with "average Joes" while Windows Phone OS has a miniscule, diminishing market share. So, either Linux is significantly better for "average Joes," or there really is no difference in regards to the usability (for "average Joes") between Windows, OSX and Linux.

Were those donated computers using the Windows versions that got it right or got it wrong?
I certainly hope that they are able to stay ahead of the viruses, trojans and malware with those old versions of Windows.
