Dr Z (Bill Ziemba) has Passed Away

June 22, 2022

Obituary: https://kearneyfs.com/obituaries/william-thomas-ziemba

He was a friend and joined our Sartin group on several occasions at Saratoga and Del Mar. Always a generous and giving individual, IMO.

We had corresponded only a month ago when he was planning to head to Keenland for Breeders' Cup. Was hoping to catch up with him on my next trip to Vancouver. He seemed indestructible, despite various growing mobility issues. We all met several times in Saratoga and I stayed at his home in Vancouver and in Whistler a few years ago. Fondest memories (though it was crazy at the time) was pushing him and our other late friend Bill Varone (Binder, here) in wheelchairs around Del Mar during Breeders' Cup 2017.

A true contributor to the mathematics of betting and analysis not only in horse racing but in economics and finance, who influenced people like Benter in his time and other more obscure whale syndicates. Condolences to his wife and daughter.

Breeders Cup 2017 (Bill Z, left)

RIP Dr Z.

Ted

Very sad. I felt lucky to have known him, if only briefly, as a customer. From finance to horses I always respected his work.

RIP.

Sorry to read this news. I was a big fan of his book Beat the Racetrack back in the day. I remember even using his methods at Wonderland dog track in the late 80s/early 90s, if you can believe that.

Way back then, you could actually bet hundreds of dollars to place/show on a DOG RACE and not impact your price too much...imagine...

At 2 tracks, 30 Miles apart. Raynham-Taunton Greyhound Park (also 🌎 class) ran on top of Wonderland. Difficult to imagine but very true.

Ziemba

A remarkable man. I am reading his book The Adventures of a Modern Renaissance Academic in Investing and Gambling. Full of wisdom and insight.
Would like to have met him.
