I think there might be a thread about this topic just created today, but I thought this link from DRF about the topic of takeout reduction given at the Tuscon racing symposium would also work here:

Wasn't sure where to post this but HANA has Oaklawn WPS takeout listed as 17.00
Are these ADW and off track % only?
As of 2017, takeout for Show bets on track is only 10% (called the show bet bonus wager).

http://www.drf.com/news/keeneland-more-giving-takeout
Excerpt:
Mike Maloney, a professional horseplayer who lives in Lexington, said Keeneland “deserves credit” for restoring some of the lower takeout rates. And he also stressed that the restoration of the lower rates was important for horseplayers because it broke a cycle in which racetracks across the country have implemented takeout hikes over the past five years without reducing the rates when handle dropped as a result.
“So often in this industry you see tracks comparing their takeout rates to other tracks, and all that leads to is higher takeout rates,” Maloney said. “But they can’t keep comparing themselves to each other. The way we move the industry forward and accomplish all the goals we want to accomplish is to start comparing ourselves to the rest of the gaming landscape, and until we recognize that our pricing must be competitive with other forms of gaming, handle will remain stagnant.”

We'll get some possible verification of that "crappy weather inordinately affects handle" hypothesis this weekend. This winter keeps clunking along, refusing to pass horses into spring.

If you compare the rates this year to the rates this time last year, it is still not good for horseplayers. They basically did this:
2017 Spring:
Burgers 5.00
Fries 4.00
Coke 3.00
2017 Fall:
Burgers 6.00
Fries 5.00
Coke 4.00
2018 Spring
Burgers 5.00
Fries 5.00
Coke 4.00
If you omit the 2017 fall rates, 2018 suddenly doesn't look so great. Nice shell game by Keeneland.

From my point of view I bet Santa Anita/Del Mar as my primary tracks. I wanted to boycott Ca early last year but the right people weren't in the mood and it would have been a huge success. Ca. still has 22.68% exacta takeout but Keeneland retreated on exacta takeout. I boycotted Keeneland last meet but will play the late P5 this meet and I might make vertical wagers depending on what I see.

I've never said people should or shouldn't bet anywhere. Just putting the info out there. I'm sure I'll make a few bets at Keeneland this year.

5 dollar fries is highway robbery. 4.75 in margin
4 dollar coke is 3 dollar margin depending on the cup
The burger could be anywhere from 3-4 dollar margin.
They kill it

Well, I'm not betting Keeneland on Friday, but takeout rates and high food prices have nothing to do with it. I don't like that they are starting their card with two 4 1/2 furlong 2yo races and a race with only six entered.

Yes, it would have been a huge success. If you remember over in 2016 and 2017 we had some outrageous calls by the Stewards, multiple jackpot surface switch fiasco's, and the fact that exacta takeout is still 22.68%. California is a much worse offender than Keeneland. They didn't want to put their effort into a boycott at that time. I had a mini one for a week and it didn't do much.
