Winning Pick Six horses, all non-favorites for races four through nine, were Gent, $11; Smokette, $17.60; Short Route, $106.20; Ya Lajwaad, $15.40; Choctaw Nation, $14.60, and Golden Souvenir, $8.20. The winning ticket was purchased on track at Del Mar for $1,176.
The Pick Six payoff eclipsed that of $1,528,818.60 paid out last year on the same calendar day – Aug. 1, 2003. That was the previous state record as well.
The ticket that actually paid 1.5 million (above on 8-1-03) was the one that I witnessed.... Wow time REALLY flies, can't believe it was that long ago

The winner was one of Mullins Owners, i believe the guy who is called Desperado stables. Mullins horses won the last two races and i think the guy went spread, spread, spread, spread, single, single.
I wagered on this particular pick 6 and had 5 out of 6 and made a nice score. I missed the Joe Herrick horse (short route)who was a Mud Route filly first timer shipping in from San Luis Rey with slow workouts on paper. I had the horse who ran 2nd. I was a Joe Herrick away from hitting 6.

People's egos are bigger than their brains.
You get a big lotto ticket or racing ticket, you look at it, and quietly put in your pocket. you don't start bragging about it.
You leave the track then come back another day with some bodyguards.
I won a $10K lottery once, didn't tell a soul. Took the day off from work a week later, drove to lotto headquarters in my state, where there was plenty of police officers all around, and had them give me a cashiers check, which I later deposited in my bank.

Iwas there Capn but that wasnt the big winner
I was there on that million dollar payoff day,and happened to stand next to the wife of the winner cause she was screaming bloody murder, and he was just standing there with a s***t eating grin. They were waiting for the place to clear out to collect. The lady you may heard of was a big winner cause the place she got her forms was the same place I got mine and the story I heard was she did win big and wanted it in cash and carried it out in a brown bag,but it wasnt the lone pick six.It was several bets and she told the form seller how she won and it was one of the most hackneyed picks of names, numbers and lack of what types of bets she made.

Didnt the infamous D.B. Cooper jump out of an airplane with 200k in twenties? If so, that also would be 20 pounds plus bindings. Some people still think he made it and got away, I do not. Any of you guys seen him around lately?

I know someone who won $1.3 million on the Monarchos KY Derby. He's actually fairly well known and his score made some mainstream press in NY.

Anyway, several of the big betting syndicates put together tickets of $50k or more. The good news for them was they hit it, the bad news was: so did many others! The twin returned less than 25K!

Arrest Made in Murder of Big Racetrack Winner
http://articles.latimes.com/1992-01-...1_robert-unger
LOS ANGELES — An Ontario man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering Newport Beach businessman Robert Unger on the day that Unger won $72,000 at a racetrack, authorities said Wednesday.
Robert Lee Ross, 23, was arrested Monday in connection with the June 1, 1991, shooting death of Unger, 33, in a hotel parking lot near Los Angeles International Airport.

A man who had won $88,000 at Hollywood Park was murdered after he left the track bragging about his "Pick-Sixes" and "Late Triples" and flashing his cash. He was followed to his hotel near the airport and robbed and shot to death. A suspect was tried for the crime in 1994, but was acquitted.

Comment: Amazing how the money figures always keep changing in these stories.

I missed that.
Monarchos was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-1. Did he bet 100,000 to win?

The exacta paid $1229 for $2, the $2 trifecta was over $12000 and the $1 super was nearly 63K, so I imagine it was some multiple of one of those bets.

As well, a good portion of it could've been the good old standard win bet, bringing back the sizable return of $23.

I remember back around 1989-1990 when Santa Anita would offer a $2 Win Pick 9. When the carryover reached $2 million, there would be a mandatory payout the next day. This happened and one guy hit it for $2.9 million, after taxes he took home a check for $2.1 million!
Nine months later, I read a full page article in the Los Angeles Times sports section about this guy. Not only did he lose the $2.1 million, but he was now $750,000 in debt, lost his house, car(s), wife & kids, boat(s), the whole enchilada, including his original holdings before the win. Lost it on heavy gambling, girls, outlandish spending, loans and sour investments...and here he was in the LA Times saying, "Don't let this happen to you!"
I'd love to see that article again.

Heritage auctions out of Dallas, Tx just offered up several $20 bills that were authenticated thru FBI serial number records as belonging to DB Cooper when he jumped. They were used as the ransom money and numbers were recorded prior to payoff. Seems a kid many years ago was playing beside the Columbia river area, and came across a bundle of cash that was kept for several years by the family. Keep in mind that the bills offered were greatly deteriorated due to exposure, and in bits and pieces for the most part-unspendable to be sure. Heritage claims to have made 40k off of just a handful of scrap paper. I suspect, as many do, that Coop is a goner.......
