If AP crumbled today, then a lot of other horses should be retiring tonight as well. On his worst day, they were nowhere to be found.
Race was reminiscent of Sec's loss in 73.....should HE have retired after that race?

Losing by a length today after traveling more miles than any other TC contender this year and giving America a chance to see a superstar is hardly a reason to now take cheap shots at how he was handled. Tom you couldn't have said it better he will always be the most recent TC winner until someone else does it. AP is and always will be a true champion.

Zayat will always be a gambler. Instead of doing what was best for the horse, he gambled by going to Saratoga and lost. No sympathy is this jack ass.

Jackass? He wanted everyone to enjoy his horse. He lost by a length after flying 9000 miles in 21 days.

Greuling?
I invite you to look at the past performances of War Admiral, Whirlaway, Citation, Secretariat, or Affirmed.

I thought they should have stayed home and waited for the Awesome Again. But, according to most, the connections know better.
He could be one of the best ever. I'd prefer to see him beat older horses first before concluding that.

Different game now. You think the Babe would hit 60 HRs today?

If horses were really more fragile, we wouldn't see claimers with 15 starts a year and long careers.
Horses are more valuable for breeding, not more fragile. American Pharoah could have surely raced a lot more and would have back in the day.

Some of you fellas sound real ignorant or dumb.... Maybe you should watch the race again and see how much fight he had as he "crumbled"
@chenoa, Would you rather them find a softer spot for the horse..... Then you'd just be saying "another ez spot for AP to pick up a paycheck." You can't win around here.

I agree, but horsemen do it differently so the comparisons are pointless.

Sires have a slightly higher value, in the minds of some people, when they retire healthy and not because of an injury.

The economics which govern today's sport make it highly unlikely that the Pharoah will run another race. I was one of those who always doubted that he belonged among the true "elites" of this sport...but I am not ready to accept the original poster's opinion here, that "the Pharoah was put to the test, and crumbled". The horse was a breath of fresh air...which breathed some life into the sport at a time when it badly needed it.
He may not have been the second-coming of Secretariat...but he gave goosebumps even to some jaded and grizzled horseplayers. And that, IMO...is good enough.
