The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has finally recognized that the masks they’ve had everyone wearing for the better part of a year are largely ineffective because aerosols easily go around the top and sides.

Those of us who can think beyond the tips of our nose have known the above "little factoid" for many months now. So...what has changed now that the CDC suddenly wants to up the face coverings? I suspect cold weather because people in cold climes can now see their breath and the breath of others escaping from behind the masks, which of course proves the point above.
