An ultrasonic gun inaudible to humans was used to scare and distract racehorses in a betting fraud scheme designed to launder drug profits, a London court heard this week.
The gun, hidden in a pair of binoculars, was used to sabotage a showpiece race at Britain`s Royal Ascot course in June, 1988.
Lawyer Jonathan Goldberg showed the court binoculars in which the lenses had been removed and replaced with two high-frequency transmitting devices.
``This device subjects the passing racehorse to a sudden and terrifying noise which no human being can hear at all,`` he said.
Goldberg said the gun was used to rob jockey Greville Starkey of victory when he was three lengths ahead, the court was told.
Starkey said his horse, Ile de Chypre, veered violently to the left and threw him from the saddle as he headed for a comfortable victory.

Wow. I've not heard this story before. How was he caught? It seems the last thing anyone would suspect or look for.

The GP grass course gets a lot of races now throughout the year, a grass course can only take so much.

When they are training, I don't think they get 3 or 4 repetitions of 4 hard whips at the same place.

It was the first week of racing at Longacres in the late '80s. At the start of the meet they'd have all the banners up, and all the hoopla that goes along with the beginning of a new meet. Anyway, in the first 3 or 4 days, at least a half dozen horses had got all nuts going down the stretch. They couldn't figure it out. One of the promotional structures they had built near the end of the stretch had this big banner on it that, when the wind hit it just right, would snap straight out and actually make this kind of cracking sound. Seemed the horses could hear it, and/or see it, and it freaked them out. It was Gary Baze that figured it out. He was heading down the stretch about 6 wide, hopelessly out of the race, when, at the exact same time as a couple horses in front of him darted towards the rail, he caught this banner out of the corner of his eye just whip out after a gust of wind.

Actually on the replay it looks like the 3 on the rail and the 6 to his outside get to the spot there it looks like the tractors and gate have killed the grass, and at that point the 3 ducks in, the 6 takes a awkward step or two as he crosses it then veers out. Just my opinion... watch it closely and see what you think.
