Daily Publication

I don't remember the name of the publication that went up against DRF approx. 1988-89. I remember going to the track at Oaklawn and seeing it for sale. I think DRF bought them out or they folded up. Can someone post the name of this publication if they remember?

Are you talking about the racing times? Or possibly sports eye?

maxwell, jimmy breslin wrote a column about his having lunch with him. breslin said, when he saw maxwell pay the bill with cash, he knew he was busted like an overstuffed valise.
allegedly he took his yacht out to sea and jumped overboard at the end.

There was also another more obscure one, I think it was called figs form. Had a graph with the numbers.
Racing Times was the one that really kicked things up though.

Sports Eye, I believe did T Breds through most of the 80s and maybe into 90s. Was pretty poor in that regard but it did harness well.

Thanks for the replies and it was the Racing Times I was referring to. I wish I still had a hard copy of one of those I thought they would give DRF a run. I liked the layout and articles along with the pps.

yep i was on the t bred staff at sports eye for a year, 1983 i think. at the time jack cohen was fighting the drf. it got pretty nasty. gossip in the office said our chart caller at a california track was banned and was arrested for being on the premises. anyway sports eye had to close shop on the tbred pps, and i had to go on to other pastures.

I have a vague recollection that the TB Times included Beyer Speed Ratings for all tracks for the first time, and when they folded, DRF picked up the Beyers and has had them ever since.

Yes. There were also the addition of track distance records (not exactly sure exactly what, it was a long time ago) that were also picked up. But it was the Beyers that really ratcheted things up. There was a small window between the RT closing and DRF buying the Beyers that I made my own figs, just for NYRA. Of course, DRF ublishing Beyers have also lessened their wagering power.
