Truth is, the armchair critics would give up a testicle each to live here.

Get real, long term US citizens are leaving California in droves. It took me 50 years to escape from there, any time I traveled to another state on vacation I did not want to return. I watched the state steadily go downhill as far as public services were concerned while government taxes, fees and fines steadily went up.
A very small percentage of my old friends and acquaintances are planning on staying there in retirement. In fact the only one positively staying is an ex California state employee who gamed the system and got a full retirement after working 9 years and getting a shoulder injury that only required arthroscopic surgery. He was planning on moving also, but has a huge contractor's lien on his house. That was a case of him trying to game the system that backfired.
California's exploding population is from a half century of immigration from 3rd world countries and the high reproductive rate of those immigrants. Also can the crap about this being a nation of immigrants, totally different era. There weren't any tax payer funded programs for immigrants in 1620.
