Equine Flu - All British Racing Cancelled

All race meetings in Britain on Thursday have been cancelled after three horses who had been vaccinated were tested positive for equine influenza on Wednesday. This is very worrying especially with the most popular meeting of the British racing year -The Cheltenham Festival- coming up in March.

Very serious situation.
Could potentially shut down the sport for months.

That is serious, has it ever happened before that everything was shut down?

Looks like the biggest outbreak was in 19th century North America.
Australia had a bad episode in 2007.

Been announced this evening that there will be no race meetings in Britain until next Wednesday 13th at the earliest. In addition 100 trainers who had runners at the meeting where one of the affected horses ran have had their yards ordered to be locked down.

From The Racing Post:

Have there been outbreaks of equine influenza in the past?

Yes. Mandatory vaccination of racehorses was introduced by the Jockey Club in 1981 following an outbreak in 1979 which caused widespread disruption. A further outbreak occurred in 1989 in which vaccinated horses were not protected. The most major recent outbreak was in 2003 when more than 1,000 horses were affected in 21 yards in Newmarket. However, racing continued during that period.

Probably the nearest we came was in 2001 with the foot and mouth crisis which meant that as lot of racecourses were in infected areas they were not allowed to race. This included the Cheltenham festival being cancelled. For those not aware The Cheltenham Festival is jump racing's equivalent of Royal Ascot or The Breeders Cup. It's actually more popular than Ascot and has some of the biggest betting turnover races of the year with attendances of up to 70,000 on each of the four days.

It isn't unusual to lose several days racing at this time of year due to bad weather but at least there are a handful of all weather flat meetings. However, even they've been stopped now so this is pretty grim.

Great news as racing started again today over jumps and the all weather flat following a six day break.

After taking and analysing thousands of samples over the last few days there were some more positive samples at Donald McCain's jumps yard where the original horses tested positive. There were also some positive samples at a flat yard in Newmarket. Apart from that the rest that have been tested so far were negative.

Great work by the BHA to take the action they did which may have ensured that things were contained. Also a great job by those who worked night and day to get all the testing done and enable racing to get back underway.
