New Jersey Senate OKs sports betting bill
Not quite yet, lambo, but they're getting close.
http://www.northjersey.com/news/nj-s...bill-1.1108803
Quote:
Monmouth Park operator Dennis Drazin said last week that although a 45-day moratorium on betting that he reached with Christie expires next week, he would be inclined to wait until the court process plays out - unless, that is, Christie acts sooner.
"If the governor signs the bill right away, I might decide to start taking bets and let [the leagues] try and stop us and get an[other] injunction," Drazin said. "But I'm inclined to let the judge make a decision."
Lesniak said he hopes to persuade Christie to take a different pathway.
"The better course would be for the state attorney general to withdraw his motion, and Monmouth would start [taking bets] immediately," Lesniak said. "The sports leagues presumably would then sue Monmouth Park, and the state would be out of the litigation.
"At that time, the leagues would begin to talk turkey" about becoming financial partners with the racetrack.
Part of Lesniak's enthusiasm can be traced to comments by new National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver. Silver said at the Bloomberg Sports Summit that the spread of sports betting is "inevitable" and that the league "will ultimately participate in that."

The ball is in Christie's court, if he's interested in playing.
Quote:
. . . The state’s long-standing attempt to allow sports betting in New Jersey could also proceed along another tack. Christie is facing a deadline later this week to file a request for U.S. District Court judge to amend his February 2013 injunction against the New Jersey sports betting law, which was the focus of the ruling of the appellate panel. Judge Michael Shipp has set an Oct. 31 date for oral argument in the case, which pits the state against the NCAA, NFL, and three other sports leagues as well as against the U.S. Department of Justice, which all supported the injunction.
State Sen. Ray Lesniak, D-Union, wants Christie to withdraw his court efforts, saying that would speed up the process of having Monmouth Park offer sports betting. The new bill could arrive at Christie's desk as soon as Friday, though he would have up to 45 days to decide whether to veto or to approve.

Christie will sign this one. With the possible closure of the Taj Mahal in AC looming something has to be done to keep people on their jobs and create revenue for a failing AC landscape. Throw in the current state of horse racing in NJ and you have a no-brainer for the Governor.

I hope he signs the bill just to give it a chance. But if you think its a no brainer take another look. He will be signing this for Iowa and not NJ.
Just my two cents but as a lame duck governor (my opinion) everything he does will be for the national scale and not for the state of NJ's benefit.
I hope this didn't slide too much into the political arena. SW will be a topic discussed nationally and people all over will look to NJ and see if it succeeded or not.
He might even conditionally veto it and make Lesniak do it to his (Christie) exact tastes.

If Iowa is a consideration for him, he will not sign the bill. There is fair large part of republican party in Iowa that is still very vocal in opposition to gambling. It took a one time coalition of democrats and "moderate" republicans to get casino gambling passed. That coalition would not happened today.

Christie can sign or not sign the bill, state law does not trump federal law and the injunctions will be coming very quickly.

Nobody cares about Denver, but the four pro leagues will be in the court house the very next day filing their injunctions against SW in New Jersey.
By the way sports wagering is not the solution to New Jersey's big appetite for waste and burning up money.

Then what is? You have mentioned this five or six times and haven't given any other examples of what can help NJ. You do realize northern NJ casinos are coming right? SW isn't the cure all it is a revenue stream and another form of entertainment as well as a possible draw to the casinos and racetracks.

Whether you want it or I want it or whether or not it would help NJ with its revenue stream doesn't matter one iota. It ain't happening anytime soon.
