Asians Ride Bus To Live
This is an article from the Morning Call, a paper in this area. Very interesting article that shows why so many Asians commute on the casino bus from Flushing N.Y. to Bethlehem, PA. so they can sell their slot voucher. Basically, they pay $15 to ride the bus, leave a $5 tip to save their seat each day, get a $45 slot voucher, then they sell it for $40 when they get to the casino and they hang out for 5 hours until the bus returns them home.

Wow.
Reminds me of my old BJ playing partner who turned to living on comps. The guy plays mostly video poker - basically, a break-even game - and manages the comps. He plays mostly on double and triple point days, never buys gas for his car, eats out every meal, and always has a houseful of prizes like big screen TVs, etc. to sell.
I asked him once how much he made at this. Answer: Nets about $18 per hour.
Like these Asian folks, he works very hard to not have a job.

Interesting concept! (I haven't read the article yet.) My job has been essentially part-time for several years, and I work from home and have some control over most days when I can do things. Pays like a so-so full time job, but great for a part-time job. I'm in the market for something else part-time to add some help to my earnings. Too bad I just signed another 1 year lease in Chicago.

I know of a shuttle bus here in Chicago that has a stop near me, Nice for the local casino gamblers. That ploy won't work on this. Free Shuttle bus to Horseshoe Casino Hammond, but written policy must game for 3 hours. I'm not expecting a comp-gaming ticket. Co-worker had thought about going a couple months ago, might be fun for 1 day at least. See what it's like. Likely have live poker. Lots of time slots.

They net $20 a day for a 7 to 8 hour ordeal, about two hours in the bus and five in the casino. Some walk around town to kill time. You see them sitting in the food court in the casino eating sandwiches they brought from home. Although it seems odd that the casino would keep this up, there are other things going on. Some gamblers buy a slew of the vouchers and try to get an edge. For instance, a guy might lay out $800 for 20 vouchers which gives him $1,000 worth of slot play. The bus companies have to make sure that they have enough actual gamblers on the bus otherwise the casino won't accept their buses anymore. I found the whole thing fascinating. Many of these people are at the casino 7 days a week and never gamble.

People in my neighborhood make much more than that begging. Plus being on the public dole and getting free shelter from benevolence organizations that I pay $890 a month now for a lesser apartment. (Learned from my friends that are in the programs and know each other.)

$20 Net per 8 hour day? Do the Math.
More like colossally stupid, if you can't gin up a better racket than that. I have to think up better schemes than this, now that I'm Retired.

The $20 assumes they just hang around without ever playing, a pretty shaky assumption, IMO.

According to the article, a lot of these Asians can't speak English, or speak it poorly, which is one of the reasons why they can't find work. But, they came here so it must really suck living in China.
