New Study: Betting on Horses,, Playing Cards, and Exercise Lowers Risk Of Dementia
https://www.thetalkingdemocrat.com/2...k-of-dementia/
Excerpt:
According to a new study, playing cards or betting on horse racing can help delay or prevent dementia in people over 65 years of age.
To arrive at these conclusions, researchers studied a cohort of 15,582 Chinese people aged 65 and over living in community. None suffered from dementia.
The follow-up lasted five years. A total of 1349 people among the 15,582 initially studied (8.7%) developed dementia. A very encouraging figure, when we know that Alzheimer’s disease alone affects nearly 15% of people over 70 in the United States. The intellectual activities practiced by the cohort were as simple as reading books, newspapers or magazines, playing board games or cards, and betting on horse racing.

The old adage, "Use it or lose it" always made sense to me.

Great, now all they have to do is classify sitting in my recliner as exercise.

To a certain extent I believe that. My Uncle Ralph was a regular at Aqueduct and Belmont into his 80s and his mind was always sharp.

More evidence of this can be seen with the number of seasoned citizens who are chess players.

No, it really does help to be a straight thinker to come up with enough winners at large enough prices to show a healthy profit.

I'll take it.
At this point, I need every guard against senility I can get.

Of course it has been determined that you have to be demented to start betting horses in the first place.

And I have dementia.

Then you haven't been in the right places at the right time. I've seen big money won and lost between good amateur chess players. Personally, I think it's easier to make money at the races than going up against sharp chess players. I'd rather go up against the "masses", if you catch my drift.

Two guys at the track.
One guy says to the other guy, "My doctor told me I have to get my pulse rate up three times a week."
"How are you going to do that?"
"I'm betting my rent money on the double."
