These threads are tough for me because personal taste always affects my response, but some bands I like post-1980, leaving out vocal groups ie Take 6, Boyz 2 Men etc and also leaving out solo artists :

Queensryche - metal
Disturbed - metal
Mint Condition - r&b funk
Tony Toni Tone - r&b
Guy - new jack r&b
Fourplay - smooth jazz

Others deserving mention, some I don't care for noted with (?) ;

Tool , Green Day? , Metallica (?), Evanescence , Guns & Roses( ?) .

In the last 20 years, I'm not too big a fan of much. Guess I'm too old school. When I go to the gym, all they seem to play is Katie Perry and others that sound like her. The hard rock now seems like its all thrash. All sounds the same to me. Post 1993, I'll take a pass on all of it.

Ditto that. I listen to a station (wnku) that plays a good mix of new and old, that gives some regional bands some airtime, and in general is pretty hip, so I'm halfway aware of new developments and I like some of it...yet I'm too old, I guess, to really care.

The only new band from last 20 years that I have purchased more than one CD is Spoon (two).

In terms of popularity I would say
U2
Bon Jovi
Guns and Roses
I would throw in Journey but they maybe a 70s band.

I agree with just about everyone, it's a great collection of bands, but I just wanted to add one more to the list.

I am not a big fan, I don't even own any of their music. But, for popularity, exposure on both TV and radio, product sales, concerts and world-wide sales, I'd have to add Huey Lewis and the News to the list.

Yes, they were lucky to be there when MTV burst upon the scene, but they sold out plenty of concerts, too.

On the radio and MTV, "The Heart of Rock and Roll," "Workin' for a Livin'," "I Need a New Drug," "This is It," "The Power of Love," and the list goes on.

I may be wrong, but I think that the album "Sports" went triple platinum...all in the 80's. I do remember that they sold over 30 million albums in the 1980's.

As aforementioned, I'm not a giant fan, but they were a powerful voice in the 1980's.

Just sayin'

So true...probably why I like so much of it! Bursny admires any musician that has the "nuts" to play for other people. Huey Lewis,,,there's a blast from the past. Saw them at SPAC must of been almost 30,000 there. My girlfriend loves those guys.

US is very good - especially when they team up with the best of the blues.

When you look at the following list from this year's Grammys, I think your comment is perfect.

Best Rock Album:
Celebration Day — Led Zeppelin (WINNER)
13 — Black Sabbath
The Next Day — David Bowie
Mechanical Bull — Kings Of Leon
…Like Clockwork — Queens Of The Stone Age
Psychedelic Pill — Neil Young With Crazy Horse

I fell in love with Neil's music as soon as he joined Buffalo Springfield. He's always been a brilliant songwriter, however, "Tonight's the Night" was the last album I truly enjoyed. Seems to me the older her got, the more he strayed from what made him great and that was over 40 years ago.

Wish I could have seen the original band with Farndon and Honeyman Scott, did see them twice in I think 84 and 86. I was just watching this bootleg I have of the original band:

One of their best tunes, band rocks out after CH learns what that hole is for:

still great here, interesting tune:

You got me to dig out some of my Pretenders albums....

The glorious racket on this song is almost unlike like anything else in rock....pretty much kicks the a$$ of most punk bands and the hair metal outfits that would soon follow.

He is one of the best guitarists for sure. Matt Cameron has taken PJ to another level since he joined the band in 1998.
