My thought is that Mitch McConnell doesn't want to loose the 'filibuster" procedure, among other things. He just might be willing to cut a deal with Schumer, i.e sacrifice Trump, in order to get what HE wants.

McConnell doesn’t need an incentive. He wants to bury Trump. The future of the Republican Party is at stake.

But Trump can not be convicted in the Senate... they lack Jurisdiction. A phase we heard allot during the attempts to present election fraud cases. That the left just jeered about.

Congress with a 10% approval rating wants to impeach someone with a 29% approval rating. 
Maybe if they took the time to pass some legislation, and stop wasting taxpayer money their collective ratings would go up.
