Betting on all horses in a race? Nay or yay?
I was beginning to hijack my own thread that was about machines accidentally claiming that winning tickets were losers, so I thought a thread specifically for betting on all horses in a race was ideal. I personally think betting on all horses is a yay for me. That's how I bet. Put money on each horse to guarantee that I win something, and hope that the longshot wins. I've won huge when the longshot wins like when I won about $32 on a $1 when the longshot won. In general, the horses are about 8 horses in the race, so I play $8 and I'm guaranteed at least a dollar or two back, a $6-7 loss isn't a big deal to me, and it's worked out splendidly when the longshot wins.

.
in the past I've bet several horses in a race
it was kinna fun - I wouldn't say I had an edge
my suggestion is to take the fave out -
when the fave does win you will get so little of your money back
and use that money on the others
if you bet all the others you should still win have a winner 2 out 3 times
and also bet double the amount on horses 3/1 to 7/1
I would also take out the extreme shots
25/1 or greater wins so seldom
even though you said you had a big score with an extreme shot
.

Yep, the Favorite is the safe bet, but you only get your money back or double the money. If I don't play on every horse in the race, I tend to play only the Longshots, a risky bet that usually loses, but only playing the Longshots, or the really Longshots, so'm only playing about $3 a race, not bad.
For example, the Longshot was something like,"Starry Nights, 20-1, Sweet Dreams,, 30-1, and the really Longshot was Run Like The Wind was 50-1. I played a $1 on each and they all lost, so I was only out $3. What I also started doing is playing WPS for $6($2 a horse) and getting a minimum of about $2-6 back. In my example , all three horses were Longshots, meaning much more than the minimum would have won. So say if Starry Nights won, Sweet Dreams placed, and Run Like The Wind showed, I would have won a minimum of $200, or a $194 profit according to my calculations.

I have a book called How To Make A Million At The Track.
It's premise was to bet 4 longshots in a race. He had some instructions on how to get it down to 4 using PP's.
He used a progression and the tables are in the book.
He says you need about $300 in capital.

Betting on all the horses in the race is effective when you are trying to impress people so you can sell them some handicapping product. You just have to remember which pocket holds the winning ticket. You would have to wager more than $1 per horse though...

I used to know a guy who would bet every entry on the card to win on 'getaway day' - the last day of the meet. He would really get excited when the track was off. Some cards he would do well, others he lost.

Absolutely! I wish I knew this 50 years ago when I first started betting horse races.

Or, you could actually just donate 20% of what you are going to lose betting to charity. That way you're a good samaritan and you come out ahead financially since you'll lose 25% or more betting every horse!

Actually, losing 25% isn't bad. The way I am betting now...some days I lose 100%.

Reminds me of something I heard a bettor say to the teller at Saratoga this summer, as I was placing my bets on the machine next to him. He was making a large number of bets, wheels, part-wheels, cartwheels, etc., paused and said to the teller, who I was sure was interested, "You might think I'm crazy but if these hit I am going to make a ton of money."

No knock on the newbies BUT, we know there are no free lunches in this game. If you want to win money it all begins with hard work...and that doesn't guarantee success!!
