Given MTO's, horses who are entered in multiple tracks and races, its apples and oranges to compare del mar and saratoga unless you do it after scratches.
that being said del mar is a great meet to bet, but the best talent is at saratoga.

Again, the less than ideal weather is the number one cause of scratches.
That in and of itself makes your attempt to compare the two meetings based solely on number of horses to the gate, an unfair comparison.
Here is a breakdown...And this is for the purposes of context.
Del Mar.....10 races carded. ONE stake..101 entered. 89 to the gate ( 8,9 avg). 12 overall scratched. Exclude AE/MTO/Off Turf....7
Handle...ON track 1.78 million....IN state 4.597 MM ISW 12.24 MM..Total $18.6 MM
Saratoga.....11 races carded, Two Stakes....110 entered 28 scratched. Excluding MTO/AE/Off Turf 15 scratched. 92 to the gate. Avg 8.36
Handle On track $6,223,128 Other sources $25,014,142 ..Total $31,237,270
Your turn

Excellent comment.
The best horses. The best intent. The best trainers. The best purses are all found at Saratoga. Everybody wants to win at Saratoga.
Meanwhile, a much less card at Del Mar is more wager friendly. Payouts and finding winners are simply much tougher and more rewarding.

as a wagering product its hard to beat del mar the past couple seasons, people disputing that would have to be looking at it with rose colored glasses.

Entries in the late pick 5 for Pacific Classic Day at DMR on Saturday: 10, 10, 15, 11, 11. All graded stakes.
None of the grades stakes on travers day could get 8 or more starters. 4 in the Flower Bowl on Saturday and 8 mediocre horses in the listed stake, err, grade 1, gold cup on Saturday
I know which one I’ll be playing

No it wasn't. CA handle includes double counting of simulcast outlets and handle from other tracks on track.

During this summer season, I was in San Diego mid-August and Saratoga late-July and again early-August.
Being on-site for racing at both Del Mar and Saratoga, I felt like Del Mar did not have their usual energy and attendance (attended on Friday prior to the Sunday hurri-quake) as opposed to Saratoga (attended on a Wednesday-Thursday and Friday-Saturday) which seemed even more electric than usual.
More than ever, I am convinced that the pre- and post-race ecosystem around Saratoga drive the engine along with the racetrack.

Enlightening, so even though according to many on this board, Del Mar is much more appealing to bet, much more money is bet @ Saratoga.
