New York's John Conte Wins NTRA/DRF NHC X

Former New York Post race selector John Conte took down the $500,000 first place prize in this year's NHC at Red Rock Casino in Las Vegas. John qualified for this year's tournament by finishing third in the Belmont Handicapping tournament held last June. In more recent years John has been providing a tout sheet called the "Grass Is Greener" for some of New York's OTBs such as Nassau and Suffolk. While being interviewed by Jill Byrne, John jokingly, or perhaps not so jokingly, suggested he would have to win the NHC seven more times to break even for his lifetime play. Anyway, it's nice to see someone who has dedicated so much of his life to horseracing win this big event.

JOHN CONTE

Congratulations to John Conte! I never met him in person but I spoke with him several times on the phone years ago, he was providing horses to watch for my Action Weekly newspaper that I published each week for a year or so. Seemed like a nice down to earth guy.

Did Action Weekly also have football picks?

What year did you publish it?

ACTION WEEKLY

Yes, I had football picks, College Hoop picks, thoroughbred speed figs and variants, horses to watch for flats and trots, and articles on all types of gambling including poker, black jack, casino games, harness and thoroughbred handicapping. I published the paper 1992-1994. It started as a newsletter, then a 24 to 36 page newspaper, then I went back to a newsletter because it was just too much work. It was a lot of fun and I learned how to use Pagemaker and design and layout pages.
