Keeneland actually increases the speaker volume as they come down the stretch.

From all I have heard he is one of the nicest guys in the industry. I constantly see people on here bashing him, but I think his voice and style were perfect for Tampa Bay. This is not an easy job to do.
I heard from one of my friends in the industry that when he got Covid, Richard sent him a hand written note and neither of us are local, not even in the same time zone. It meant a lot to my friend so that tells me what a good guy he must be.
I wish him nothing but happiness in his retirement.

In 2021, with all the trip handicappers out there, there shouldn't be any trees at any track blocking any portion of the race. Oaklawn, Saratoga, you listening? (Santa Anita has trees too, but these days they only block the first 1/4 mile of 1 1/2 mile turf races. Still, they should come down.)

FairGrounds too...the first 150yds or so on the backside (turf & dirt) and badly blocked by trees.

And of course they've both had 100-year careers, so good for them.
If nothing else...the Grunder career gives some much-needed encouragement to any young race announcers out there who are hoping to establish themselves in this business. If Grunder could do it...then there is hope for them as well.

Jumbotrons are different though (although, to be clear, you can put them behind the backstretch as Churchill did; they just have to be bigger).

A Jumbotron is a tradeoff that helps fans see the race. A tree does nothing except obstruct the view.

Of course the tree is an obstruction....But when analyzing replays, Jumbotrons are a bother at a particular stage in the backstretch which I find irksome, to say the least.

I understand. As I said, Churchill found the ultimate solution on video screens (although they're no angels- they have a ton of other unnecessary obstructions in their infield).

Oaklawn? We have "ONE" tree that takes a millisecond to pass. In fact I didn't even realize it was there until reading your post.

Really? I think you have trees at the 7 furlong pole, the backstretch, and the 5/16 pole. If I ever get to Oaklawn (I hope to do so someday- my mother, who just died, wanted to go and even got to know the late Terry Wallace, but never went), I will do a tree census.....

Is it possible you don't notice the trees because you are up so high atop the grandstand? They certainly look like they obstruct vision on TV and in the seats.
