Very nice man, once upon a time around 1996 he actually took the time to have a fairly warm, genuine 5 minute conversation with me at Turfway Park, instead of brushing me off.

Super friendly and accomodating. A first class gentleman when nobody is looking. Embodies many things that a man should be.

https://www.dwaynelukasbook.com

If you come to Oaklawn you can buy it in the gift shop. I think I also saw a link where it's available at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

I've heard some of his former staff appreciating all he's done to get them where they are now when they've been interviewed on podcasts, and they've referenced his reminding them of something in the book when they've called him to ask questions/get advice. "Look at page 81"

I read a biography of Lukas entitled "D. WAYNE" by Carlo Devito published in 2002. Very good book about his background from a stunt rider, quarter horse trainer right up through the height of his training career.

Had the potential to be a fantastic interview. Unfortunately, the name Holthus and not knowledge of Lukas himself, or the racing game, was totally detrimental to the story that he could have told. Dragging his wife into it and then discussing that sage totally killed it.

I too have a D.Wayne story from Turfway Park when he ran horses in the "Spiral Stakes". After the races my friend and I were heading out and Lukas was coming the other way. When he got within earshot, I said to my friend, loud enough for him to hear, "Hey, I think this guy is somebody famous, and then I asked him "Are you Harvey Pack??" He cracked up, stopped, and thanked me for making his day.

And, taught math and coached basketball at La Crosse and Blair (WI) high schools for 9 years from the late 1950's into the late 1960's. He invented a weighted basketball shoe and sold the patent to Converse. Is also close friends with former Indiana coach Bobby Knight.

Just finished watching this one. Definitely recommended. I see the two of them at Oaklawn most days, and it's nice having a fuller picture of the Coach and his dear wife.
