Thanks for the post. I always knew she was a good jockey, but didn't follow her that closely until she came west. I was never afraid to place a bet on her after her first couple of months riding in California. She certainly deserves all the accolades she has received.

I now feel that Chantal Sutherland is a top notch jockey. Not as good as Julie but close.

Julie

There was about a 6-month stretch when I thought she was the best jockey in North America. Only time I have ever thought that about a female.

Met her near the Preakness barn (post retirement) where she let me take a picture of her with my youngest son. Man is she tiny.

I'll never forget that horrific spill at Gulfstream (?) when she was stepped on and later was told that had she not been wearing a flak jacket she could possibly been killed.

She proved her mettle on the NJ circuit for many years
against stalwarts like Chris Antley, Rick Wilson, Joe Bravo.
At the time we just did not know how bright a star we were watching.

She graduated to the NYRA circuit then went out west.
East coast jockeys have a tough time of it there, but she did quite well.
Even nabbed a fellow named Jay Hovdey and had a kid.

Did she ever get close to coming to blows with any

of the Monmouth guys you mentioned? I've heard rumors.

I believe I read that she was in a feud with one of the tops jocks and
at the Monmouth Jocks pool, she picked up a lawn chair and hit him
over the head with it.

Her fight was with Miguel Rujano who was never considered a top notch jock on the Jersey circuit.

Miguel tried to use his whip on Julie in a race. After race, Julie punched him. He threw her in pool and tried to keep her under water. Julie escaped and threw a lawn chair at him.

They were both fined and Rujano got days.

I miss the jockey's pool but still sit in those lawn chairs to hear Brad Thomas give his picks at 1230PM.

HRTV is showing the 2003 Breeders Cup from SA when Julie rode Halfbridled to win the Juv Fillies.
Just saw a neat segment on Krone, showing her in the jocks room riding the equisizer in a simulated race as she watched a replay on TV. She was riding along, going to the whip and everything...with a huge weight laid across the base of her neck and shoulders. Guess it's for balance & stamina.

Cool stuff
