Rich Strike PPs before KY Derby

after getting 10th in a MSW race he won a Maiden Claimer and then proceeded to lose everywhere he went before the Derby
he got 3rd in an AOC race
then 5th, 3rd and 4th in black type stakes and then 3rd in a Grade 3 stakes
the obvious explanation is that here is a late bloomer who is dramatically improving
and his improving speed figures seem to bear this out
but is there another possible explanation_______???
is this a horse who often chooses not to give his all for whatever reason_____???
in other words, is this a horse worth betting against_______????
