"A Turf Sprinter"

It's neither here nor there at this point, but in his latest interview Baffert mentioned that when he got Justify he thought he looked and ran like a turf sprinter.

I only bring this up because before the derby I had mentioned that Jeff Siegal had said Justify's leg extension looked like that of a turf horse.

Just felt a little bit vindicated is all.

I also mentioned that I felt that Justify was a sprinter based on energy distribution. It has been the same now in all of his races. His ability to attend a stout pace for 6f followed by dramatic decelaration is classic sprinter.

At least Baffert pegged him as a sprinter at some point too.

He won the derby, but with the energy distribution and decelaration of a sprinter, however, he wasn't caught, so I guess it all depends on how you interpret what was going on in that race.

I can't imagine he'll lose the Preakness, so even if he wins with the same decelaration pattern and slow time, it won't be up for debate.

Anywho

They would never do it, but it would be fun to enter him in a stakes sprinting on the turf and see what he did.

I would argue that the bolded energy distribution above (EARLY) is what normally wins on sloppy tracks. People will then bring up the 2013 Orb Derby. I would counter with this.

2018 Kentucky Derby 22.24 45.77 1:11.01 1:37.35 2:04.20
2013 Kentucky Derby 22.57 45.33 1:09.80 1:36.16 2:02.90

Palace Malice continued a blistering pace and fractions for WAY longer than the 2018 iteration of the Derby and did not burn out until after the mile call.
