Frankie Pennington
everyone thinks that they took Pennington off MAXIMUS MISCHIEF for a better New York rider.
i think Pennington took himself off the horse to ride LUCKY LEE today in that 9th race in Aqueduct.

If true, he's a much better jockey than he is a horseplayer

So you think he took himself off a horse who was heavily favored, and who at that time was one of the favorites for the Derby, to ride a horse that was probably a conservative 500:1 to win the Derby?
That's what you actually thought?

I had to check the calendar and see if I'd slept clear through to April 1st.

a matter of fact i had my doubts about it before the race, now i am sure he wanted to be on LUCKY LEE over MAXIMUS MISCHIEF, and its not even close.

Two things...
Pennington was off Maximus Mischief a lot sooner following the horses' win New York in November than people wish to admit or care. That win basically 'sold' the connections that they did have a legit horse to put on the Derby trail and a big time New York rider was soon sought to be his rider.
Secondly, at various times, there were some at Parx who did think Lucky Lee could be superior to Maximus. Remember, before New York, Maximus did not beat a single runner of substance at Parx.
Pennington and the agent did not make any call ... the call was made for them. Not a knock on Pennington, just the reality.
