California tells online retailers to start collecting sales taxes from customers

Beginning Friday, Amazon.com and other large out-of-state retailers will be required to collect sales taxes on purchases that their California customers make online.

There is an article in the local paper saying that Nebraska was looking into doing the same thing. I am afraid this will become a national trend. I understand why they have sales taxes but I think it is poor way for states to raise money. My high school history use to a day to rail against it in class every year. He said that no tax discouraged commerce than the sales tax. His big two gripes were the sales tax and laws that outlawed dove hunting.

Some day in the not too distant future, horse players will betting on computer generated races over the net. Race tracks will become casinos and shopping centers. And some crooner will be belting out "there used to be a race track here".

With the global marketplace and the internet, I'm sure no one will have to suffer the insult of paying sales taxes. Someone will figure out a way around them and I support it 100%
Screw the states. Sales taxes are unacceptable.

Illinois just passed this law a little while back and sure enough I ordered some stuff and there was sales tax included on the internet purchase. What tax is next?

We were dropped in CO a year or so back over something similar. Interestingly enough, I work with a guy in CA with a large affiliate business through Amazon. He got a personal letter from some dude at Amazon stating that his affiliateship was safe, so they are quietly holding on to their money-makers. It also means that they aren't really removing the "nexus" from the state (which may not even be possible due to Kindle manufacturing, etc as pointed out in the articles) and will still be on the hook to collect taxes. I'm sure they'll be a lawsuit like in NY...

Well, there was just a conference in Europe, one of things discussed was a global internet tax. The theory is that all internet users create "commerce" just by connecting. Sorry, I don't have any handy links.

These laws are not new taxes -- you're supposed to pay that state tax regardless. (Usually you have a choice between submitting receipts for everything you bought sans state sales tax or just using a standard estimate). But most people don't pay it so they want to force the online retailers to collect it for them.

My guess is they will not collect anywhere near the $317 million estimate. And if the larger retailers move out of state, similar to what happened in Illinois, the State will lose more than that in lost wages, lost sales tax & higher unemployment. California is a basket case, let it slide into the Pacific!

The state government figured that Amazon and other retailers needed the California market too much to bail out of it. Instead, those retailers have cut off their affiliate relationships, which puts thousands of small businesses in California at risk of failure. One of those small businesses, Savings.com, sent a letter to its California customers saying that they will pack up and leave — and take their 100 or so jobs with them:

The guy I was working with incorporated in Nevada (with Amazon's help). He doesn't have any employees so it was easy enough to do.

The message is clear - leeching low life government only hurt this country.
Jerry Brown is a moron. Bottom line - HE is a greedy SOB and his state pays for his incompetence. But, they elected him, so who cares?
Anyone who thinks taxes is the solution to anything is a flat of idiot.
