Trainer Aristocracy/ Priviledged Class?

What percentage of the total purse money available do the TOP 100 TRAINERS take down in one racing year...?

What percentage of that total purse money is left over for all the OTHER trainers....?

100?

There are 30 "top" trainers at most.

I bet 30 take down 70% of purses

Good point...I'd like to find out what the facts are...but have no easy way to query this...

You are most likely right about this...Say the TOP 50 or TOP 30...that is even better...

You can glance here to get an idea. You can also sort the columns by clicking on the fields/titles at the top.

http://www.equibase.com/stats/View.c...ear&tb=trainer

You can do the same with owners, jockeys and horses.

You could probably get a good estimate fairly easy. I think the jockey club puts out a publication that tells the total purses in the previous year. If you can find that number, then you can look at the Equibase stats for last year and start adding (top 5, top 10, top 20, top 30) to get the numbers your looking for.

Based on rough, rough 2017 purse numbers and with 3 months to go, the TOP 100 TRAINERS are likely to amass nearly 400 million dollars by years end...but I am sure my estimates are flawed...can anyone help me out here...?

The trainers 100 through 200 will account for more than 100 million...
So the TOP 200 TRAINERS are likely to account for over 500 million dollars in 2017...

So essentially, 5 percent of the trainers will obtain almost 50 percent of all purse money......and 2.5 percent of trainers will make off with about 75 percent of that....somebody show me that I am wrong on this one.

I can't say that you're wrong, but I don't know that it's totally out of whack. There are a lot more licensed trainers than there are those who are working at it as a full time job. Probably the bottom 2000-3000 trainers out of 6000 are just starting out or dabbling in training.

So purse amount would be the x axis, and number of trainers would be the y axis...?

And the yellow and green space represents 50 percent of something...?

Such that about 18 percent of the trainers account for 50 percent of the purses..?

(Graph needs scaling)

(Graph needs scaling)

y axis = Purse Earnings

x axis = Trainer Names

crude example (Saratoga... Brown Pletcher Mott Baffert near $5M, most everyone else $500K-$50K) Light green is the 'aristocracy' as this thread calls it. Yellow is the working class trainers.
