The longer this goes on the more Trump suffers. I get you think its hilarious I got the ending of this wrong but I thought the President would at least be smart enough to know he's lost this battle.

He can put it off for a short time and try to make it look like the Dems are forcing him into it. One possibility that seems likely is that Trump will put something for the Dems on the table in exchange for the money he wants for the wall, and offer to sit down with them for further negotiations.
The Dem position is that Trump needs to open the government and then we will sit down for negotiations. They aren't likely to change that. Trump can then blame the lack of negotiations on the Dems and declare a National Emergency.
