I was at that one and really loved Risen Star, had followed his career while living in New Orleans. Funny there was a question if he would even run, Roussel did not want to run him on an off track and wavered on scratching, came up a good rating that morning, so he kept him in.
Gene Klein lost it after the race and vowed to never ride Day on any of his horses again, not sure if he held to this but he might have, as he died just a couple of years later.
It was too bad Woody forced the race the way he did, because Forty Niner was a quality animal and think he deserved a better fate than that of a rabbit in a TC race, crazy he just missed in the Derby and Woody wasted him that way in the Preakness. Yes it was different times then...
Claiborne also kept the horse with Woody for the rest of the year and he did win the Travers and maybe the Haskell later that summer. I see he is still alive pensioned in Japan, it would be nice to get him to a place like Old Friends.
