Fair comment, Robert Fischer.

But... according to an old Scottish dictum:

"He who claims, must show."

Okay. Let's suppose there is no need for more missiles, which is probably true.

Please explain to us how smaller class sizes would increase educational attainment in the Maths and Sciences and how monies invested there towards 100,000 more teachers in those disciplines would achieve that.

maybe I got your page?
just happened to check this thread..

It was a sarcastic post, and I can only offer anecdotal evidence.

My father was a dept. head, and mathematics teacher for inner-city public schools.

educational attainment in math and sciences? i am no expert in education by any means i can only say that when i went to college my accounting professor said that if i did my homework the accounting course was an easy "A". needless to say, i did my homework and i got an easy "A" in the course.
i went on to graduate with a 4-year degree at a 3.0 gpa in accounting, this after barely graduating from high school with a 69 average, in which doing homework was not a habit of mine.

Pell grants are investment in the nation's growth. A kid who wouldn't have otherwise gone to a community college or technical school has the potentail of costing the tax payer much more in welfare to live, jail time, etc etc. With the pell grant the country gets back an educated person who has the potential to get a decent job and pay taxes.
If I were running the show, the money would not go to individuals but to the Universites to pay for the classes AND if you don't complete the class or show good cause why you did not - you pay the money back.

I know one individual who applied and received a 5000 pell grant and never attended a class.

So let's throw out pell grants, no let's keep them and make Bank of America, GE, Mobil Oil and all the other cheats pay their fair share of taxes, then we'll have enough extra revenue for pell grants for the millineum.

Name three companies who are not paying their fair share, and how they are cheating.

And for extra credit, tie that in with the exponential rise in tuition rates and the availability of student loan money. There will never be enough funds for all the students to get loans as long as colleges keep charging more and delivering less.

I know and it's fine if you have lots of money to spend on the traditional classical curriculum, but it doesn't get you a job anymore. When I went it was $212 a semester for full course load, living off campus (I'm that old). Campbell's soup was 17 cents a can.

For those unaccustomed to the loopholes and shelters of the corporate tax code, GE's success at avoiding taxes is nothing short of extraordinary. The company, led by Immelt, earned $14.2 billion in profits in 2010, but it paid not a penny in taxes because the bulk of those profits, some $9 billion, were offshore. In fact, GE got a $3.2 billion tax benefit. (from ABC report)

Any insight into one of the primary drivers of the preposterous ballooning of tuition costs?
