Because of track conditions due to weather, a lot of UK/Ireland jumps racing meet days have been called off. A couple of the jumps cards have been switched to "jumpers bumpers" - flat races for jumps horses. Today there was such a meeting held at Newcastle, and one 7-lb apprentice jockey, Charlotte Jones, showed once again how early speed and getting your horse to relax out front (in this case, WAAAAAAAAY out front) can be so powerful.
When's the last time you saw a race with a camera shot from the rear of the field as they go down the back straight showing what you see here ??????
Jockey Jones brought this one home at 9-1, and had a less dramatically run but more shockingly priced winner earlier on the card at 50-1.
Quote from Jones after race: "It wasn't much my choice, The Steward does what The Steward wants."
Sometimes letting the horse do what it wants instead of wrangling it into submission is a good thing!
Alas, there was no inquiry of The Steward himself to find out what he thought.
