He scored 23 goals in 82 games during the regular season, not nearly enough for a player with his marvelous shooting skills. He had a huge goal —one of the most significant of the postseason —to beat Ottawa, 1-0, in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final but scored just two more goals in the final 11 playoff games. Even though he had 23 points in the 25 postseason games, it was hard to find anyone in organization to say he was playing well.
My belief is Evgeni Malkin wasn’t thrilled to play on the same line with Kessel. And Sidney Crosby? Sullivan acknowledged Crosby and Kessel have no chemistry together. None.
Kessel has to score goals to help the Penguins. He doesn’t help the team with his forechecking or his defense. He doesn’t play any type of physical game, a big reason he has been able to play in 610 consecutive regular-season games, the 11th-longest streak in NHL history.
It’s no secret that Kessel often drives Sullivan crazy. I’m guessing he has produced the same reaction all the way up the company ladder, from Jim Rutherford to Mario Lemieux."

They played on different teams in the USHL, Crosby played for the Shattuck St. Mary’s in Minnesota, and Kessel played for the Madison Capitols in Wisconsin.
This was the year before Sid went on to play major junior hockey with Rimouski, and phatboy went on to play hockey for the University of Minnesota, where he majored in hot dogs and pop.
They played against each other once in the USHL.

Leafs sign Timothy Liljegren to three year entry level deal. $925,000 (incl $92,500 signing bonus) and Salary A bonuses to $400,000 max.
Timothy Liljegren will only play in Sweden or with the Marlies next season. No possibility of him joining the OHL's IceDogs.
The native of Sweden has turned heads at Leafs' development camp this week after missing much of last season with mononucleosis.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are reportedly proposing a Joe Pavelski for Phil Kessel trade offer to the San Jose Sharks.

According to Bloomberg's Scott Soshnick, former Texas Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg is close to buying the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes for roughly $500 million.
Soshnick reports the the deal would keep the Hurricanes in Carolina under the new ownership.
Peter Kermanos Jr. is currently the majority owner of the Hurricanes and is joined by 18 minorty investors, including general manager Ron Francis. Kermanos became the franchise owner of the Hartford Whalers in 1994. He told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun earlier this year he was willing to sell the team.
Greenberg left the Rangers in 2011 after seven months as CEO and two seasons as a part owner of the team.
According to Forbes Magazine’s annual valuation of National Hockey League franchise values, the Carolina Hurricanes have fallen from 28th in 2015 to 30th this season with an estimated value of $230 million. Forbes’ calculations estimated that the Hurricanes’ value increased by 2% over 2015’s $225 million estimated valuation, but the team was leapfrogged by the Arizona Coyotes (9% increase) and Florida Panthers (league-leading 26% increase) to leave the Canes in last place among the 30 NHL teams.
Forbes estimates that the Hurricanes lost a league-high $15 million last season, but they did not see a drop in the franchise value from 2015. All seven Canadian teams, affected by the drop in the Canadian dollar over the past year, saw their franchise values drop, led by a 7% decrease in the value of the Vancouver Canucks. The only American-based team to see a drop in franchise value was a 2% decrease in the value of the New Jersey Devils.
It sounds like Chuck got taken to the cleaners with this deal, the Canes are not worth $500 mill.

Peter Karmanos bought the Hartford Whalers for $47 million in 1994, moved the team to North Carolina in 1997, and has now sold the team for $500 million in 2017, not a bad return.
Carolina draws the fewest fans in the NHL as measured by both a per-game average (11,776) and capacity percentage (64%) of PNC Arena. Fan interest has waned in the Raleigh-Durham Triangle region since the Hurricanes captured the Stanley Cup in 2006; the Canes have not qualified for the playoffs since 2009, making it seven straight springs without meaningful hockey.
Carolina Hurricanes Average Attendance
PNC Arena = 18,680
2012-13 = 17,558
2013-14 = 15,483
2014-15 = 12,594
2015-16 = 12,203
2016-17 = 11,776
Obviously a fair weather fan base in Carolina, good luck with that Chuck.

I like the Canes. They're one forward away from being a solid contender. Trying to find a person going to Vegas so i can bet them and probably Dallas. Screw Peter Karmonos he sold my Plymouth Whalers to Flint and left me over an hours drive to see the OHL. Team USA moved in the arena the Whalers left. They have talent but most of the visiting teams don't. Looking forward to the World Summer Showcase at the end of the month. The best young players from USA, Canada, Sweden and Finland playing at USA Arena.

Maybe the Leafs. Dallas is too low after seeing that. Kind of like the wise guy Derby horse. Leafs still need another d-man. Which may happen this summer or at the trading deadline. That price on the Canes is juicy. Thanks.

TSN NHL
PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Pens' Rutherford: I don't foresee Kessel trade.
However, Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford quieted those rumours on Thursday in an interview with 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh.
“Phil Kessel's an important part of the Penguins,” Rutherford said, per the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “He gets a lot of points. He scores big goals. He sets up big goals. The more impact players that you have, like we have, the better chance you have of winning.
“It may not be on a regular basis, but it may come at a certain time in a series or whatnot, just like it did against Ottawa. Kessel came up with the big goal in that 1-0 game (in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final).

Friend of mine going to Vegas next week. 100.00 to play with. 50.00 on Canes. 30 on Leafs 20 on Dallas. If three out of these four make the Conference Finals you can bury the team left over to win it all.
