He was responding to my question, which limited it to colts and geldings to avoid the Zenyatta debate we've had 100 times.

I think "best in the world" is tough because then we open it up to turf and it's apples and oranges, but then I wouldn't have a problem putting Wise Dan on there. I don't know, depends how you look at it.

For sure this is a discussion everybody will have another opinion on.

But when I for example think of what quality fields full of outstanding horses Tiznow has beaten in his 2 Classic wins, this is just something else...

Once in a while I wish my memory was a little better. I can't remember all the details so forgive that part of it. I was sitting a Fonner Park one afternoon and had played a Pick 4 ticket. At about 10 minutes to post time, one of the guys that normally sits with me asks " Who do you have in your pick 4 here?" I told him i had singled the 6. He then started looking at the race and about 5 minutes later said " This is a tough race, why did you single the 6?" He's the best horse by a long ways, I responded. At a minute to post, all of a sudden he exclaimed " That's Wise Dan!"

TimeformUS Chart for the Pegasus, you can see each horse's previous two figures as well. Running lines are past performance style.

Excerpt:

Appropriately, the festivities began Thursday evening with a libation, a ”Keeneland Breeze,” the server called it, a mash-up of bourbon, Triple Sec and ginger ale, the cocktail hour courtesy of the Keeneland Association—your bloated takeout dollars at work.

Serious bourbon drinkers seemed offended by the blasphemy of it--a fellow sipper whispering he thought it was a great waste of perfectly good Maker’s Mark. “Perhaps,” I said, “but we get to keep the cool souvenir glasses.”

The reason Sharp Azteca got outrun is as I posted (#162) I tried to caution players here about going all in on him. The scenario posted proved to be correct for anyone who watched the race.

"If he tries to wire the field (which is his best chance imo) I think he'll tire badly turning for home and finish in the bottom half of the field. If he rates Gun Runner, West Coast & Collected and others will outfinish him.

Under what circumstance would Sharp Azteca be a play? I'd need at a minimum 15-1 and believe that he'd NOT face any pace pressure until the 2nd call. Neither of those two things are likely".

There are plenty of things we are all wrong in this game but I thought my post left zero wiggle room.

For you to write "It's always easier after the fact" is insulting.
I don't disagree with your rationale for not playing him. I didn't play him.

However, I think what I said is correct.

If you looked at just fractions and speed figures they would have told you he could make the lead and that his final time figures at 1M were comparable.

I think if the race was 1M and he tried to go, he would have been put away quickly because he isn't as good a horse as Gun Runner and if he rated you would have seen the same result for the same reason.

And yes, getting some of them right doesn't mean you will get them all right. It's always easier after the fact.

If it's harder after the fact, you are in the wrong game!
