MSNBC’s Ali Velshi dropped one righteous rant on Thursday, chastising Republicans and the president for running on protecting people with pre-existing conditions. The MSNBC newscaster called out the GOP as liars, and said anyone who believed them probably believes the moon landing was faked.

“President Trump has asked Americans to forget the last eight years of the health care debate,” Velshi said of Trump’s claims that it is his party, and not the Democrats, who will protect healthcare. “That would be a lie. Hashtag lie alert.”

“Dismantling Obamacare has been a central tenet for both President Trump and the GOP,” he said. “Republicans in congress have voted 70 times to repeal protections for people with pre-existing conditions.” He then cut to several ads placed by Republicans in which candidates pointed to their nonexistent record of standing up for people with pre-existing conditions. He also cautioned that their lies just might work.

“26% of people think that Republicans are going to protect pre-existing conditions. I don’t know how the number is that big,” he said. “I guess about 23% of the people believe that Barack Obama is a Kenyan-born Muslim so it’s about 3% more than that. And I guess about 23% of people believe in UFOs.”

ObamaCare was the first federal program to deal with pre-existing conditions. It did so by loading the burden on a relatively small group of young and healthy people by force of the individual mandate. Before ObamaCare, pre-existing conditions were covered by the states, generally though state-run high-risk pools.

The Republicans did not vote to repeal protections for people with pre-existing conditions, they voted to kill a monster program that included a bad method to cover such conditions. The GOP intended to replace ObamaCare with a better program, and there is no evidence that such a replacement program would not deal with the pre-existing condition issue.

Problem is there is no evidence a replacement program exists... that's the unsettling part and where Democrats are claiming high ground at the moment.

Could've just expanded medicaid with a state-based premium program like Paul Ryan suggested a decade ago... but no...

Well they are waiting on rulings regarding the pre existing conditions stuff. If struck down the GOP has to have a replacement because at that point people WILL lose coverage and that would be political suicide... not that its stopped them so far.

The rest of the industrialized world uses a combination of socialism and private maarkets to deal with healthcare better than the US for less money per capita
