Interesting development in Massachusetts

There appears to be forward movement to build a new Thoroughbred race track in the Bay State.

Usually against new tracks given the state of the game, but having a healthy New England circuit isn't a bad idea. Whether it would be healthy or not is another story.

Generally agree we don't need more product now, but I do think we need updated venues like Gulfstream. As the BH commenters noted, 3k people/day seems like a stretch but if there is a brand new grandstand with modern amenities and other surrounding attractions maybe not out of reach. I think the proposed schedule is too long also I'd like to see them run a much shorter meet or run using a festival approach.

Their model sounds like a good one for Monmouth and includes some ideas that current Monmouth management has proposed including the hotel. For those of you that aren't aware, Monmouth Park is less than a mile from Ft. Monmouth, an old Army base and I believe the location of the original Monmouth Park. I'd love to see Monmouth use its own available space or the nearby vacant Ft. Monmouth space to include permanent stabling with a synthetic training track so horseman can stay all winter and not be at the mercy of Stronach's burgeoning monopoly for stall space. It is an idea I believe Drazin floated at one point. It could be possible to have a bridle path leading from the Fort to the track.

These people are delusional. Do all this without a casino attached? Who the hell is going to stay at that hotel.

Comparing harness to TBs is like comparing apples to jello pudding, but for the sake of conversation...

When the new building at the meadowlands was erected (with the intent of a casino down the road), they made the new building very updated with some pretty nice amenities. Open air roof top deck that you can see the city on a nice night, some higher end dining, a night club. Like anything new, opening night was packed. over time the crowds dwindled, the night club never caught on, dining in the restaurants is always below capacity, usually no one there on any given live racing night.

I think an updated/new facility would work in certain areas, but the demand has to be there. A casino would work in that area, but not for me. I would still make my trips to AC despite the distance and tolls.

This is a pipe dream. Creating anything new in Massachusetts is impossible. The casino gambling law was passed in 2011 and there has not been a shovel full of dirt turned over in the Boston location. Still not even close. I hear that the Springfield casino will open "next year".

Where would you put the track? Certainly not east of Worcester. Can't put it in the western part of the state because Saratoga would be less than an hour away. So, where? In central Mass only the Mass Pike is a major highway. Anyone that has been on that road knows what torture it is to get to or pass Rte 84.

I was hoping the NH legislature would pass a casino so the Rock could stay open but that is dead. I am afraid TB racing in New England is history like trolley cars and dog racing.
