Almost 5 years ago I was touring the USS Sullivans in Buffalo, the destroyer that the sailor in the photo was on in WWII. Our 93 year old tour guide had also served on the ship in WWII and knew this sailor very well. He said George had had a few beers at the time and it was a spontaneous thing, his fiance was with him and she was not happy about it, but they still got married. There is a display on the ship about it with lots of photos and a video playing with interviews over the years.
