I actually almost went to work as a chart caller/proof reader for what was then Sports Eye....The guy wanted to hire me on the spot once he saw the results of the proofreading ( charts and PP's) test and answered his questions on general knowledge of horse racing.
The barrier was that I lived in Northern NJ and the office was in Port Washington out on Long Island. The pay was not very much. The hiring manager told me I'd be spending my entire paycheck just getting to and from work.
Anyway. Chart callers back then( early 80's) just focused on the positions of the horses at certain points of call and recorded them. Of course the video of the race could be reviewed, but it had to be done quickly. All of the data had to be compiled by a certain time to get the info into the office before the next edition went to print. I really wanted the job because it would have been my "in" to the business. Keep in mind, this was 30 years ago.
Sorry for the long version.
