But now, as the pandemic eases its grip, companies are considering not just how to safely bring back employees, but whether all of them need to come back at all. They were forced by the crisis to figure out how to function productively with workers operating from home — and realized unexpectedly that it was not all bad.
If that’s the case, they are now wondering whether it’s worth continuing to spend as much money on Manhattan’s exorbitant commercial rents. They are also mindful that public health considerations might make the packed workplaces of the recent past less viable.

Yeah...no shit...if you're into commercial real estate, COVID-19 has basically ruined that sector of the economy forever IMO
It was probably going to happen eventually...but this just accelerated the process.

The reason people like to live and work in NYC is because of the restaurants, sports areanas, theaters, erc., as well as the public transportation.
If people cannot use those safely, then, commercial rents will be the least of their problems.

Is there a chiropractor in the house?
Hold on there, big guy, you don't want to get a stiff neck from patting yourself on the back.

Nothing to pat.
It's all common sense...like it's always been.
It's the naive among us who thought, when this all started, it's just a giant party and excuse to binge NetFlix...then everything will get back to normal after a few weeks.
GIANT
ECONOMIC
REPURCUSSIONS
you have no idea...still...and neither do I...

Would you be shocked to know that I agree with most of what you have written re: this problem ( sans the hysterical tone, natch)?.Nothing good, bad or indifferent lasts forever, however.
And I don't have Netflix.

And people will soon realize that college tuition is 100% RIDICULOUS and having a brick and mortar school is not required for much of it.
Same for business travel.
In fact, the internet is proving itself to be a damn good replacement for a lot of things we used to think important.
WE should provide FREE internet to all, including Zoom-like software.
What's another tril or two?

You can learn just about anything for free by using the internet, youtube, or your local library -- if you've got the motivation.
A college degree only proves to your employer that you finish what you started.
If you're an entrepreneur you're better off saving the $100k or $200k you'd spend on college and putting it into your business. Plus, if you go bankrupt you can walk away from your debts. If you go bankrupt with student loan debt you still have to pay it back.
The best thing about college is the social interaction and the networking -- especially if you go to an Ivy League school. Then it's all about being a member of the club. Just having an Ivy League degree will open up doors.

Another thing, guys: This has to be the demise of the porn industry. Sex by social distancing ain't goin' to cut it for most. And face masks? Really? All those out of work porn stars are going to have find real work.

Pretty rich, considering the politics of the source.
