He's not the first jockey, nor will he be the last, to get tricked by the use of two different finish lines at Laurel. He thought they were using the 16th pole finish line. I personally am not a fan of using two lines.

10-pound apprentice in his 28th start.

Luis Garcia, a far more experienced jockey, got 5 days for a similar incident on June 11 where he likewise misjudged the finish line. I'd expect something similar here.

I simultaneously understand why they do it and have to laugh that they do it.

Using the two lines is one of the best physical characteristics about the track.

Not at all sure how this happens at Laurel. The finish poles have big red lights they use depending on which pole is the "finish".

Yes, and dirt races at one mile use the 2nd finish line, while all of the other traditional dirt distances use the first finish line. It's a simple rule of thumb, and you have to either be unaware of the simple rule, or unaware of what distance your mount is running in the current race, or very distracted to somehow get it wrong.

The length of the extended stretch of the 1M race often adds an element of quality required of the horse and/or the rider.
At times you learn more about the horse. In some situations there is wagering value to be had if the 1M is more demanding than a race which was run at 8.5f or 9f.

It increases the quality of the product.

It is definitely possible the 1 finishes better than 3rd if the rider keeps riding IMO.

Yea.
It may not be evident on the video for all, but the first finish line occurs early on at 4 seconds on the video.

the 1m races at Laurel are many times the most formful races on the card.

This particular bunch of $12.5k MdnClm 2yos without a decisive favorite and trying to go to that 2nd-Finish Line, had me thinking of a less formful scenario. 'Chaos'.

Unfortunately I didn't spread there on race day, using 'wise-guy' late chalk Minimo on a small ticket. Looked a winner but hung late.

Exactly , I don’t ever bet that track but others do it too . It’s just an invitation for problems plain and simple . I doubt it would ever be a Jockey’s idea that’s for sure . Somehow people that don’t ride horses in a race have come to the conclusion that it’s easy . It’s the same with every professional sport . You hear the “experts “ and “critics” point out every mistake professional athletes make .

1. They are still human beings . So, mistakes are inevitable.

2. In the spirit of a race they are trying to keep their mount and their own asses in one piece and win at the same time . Not easy !

So the track will just add another thing for them to think about and contend with .
