Thoroughbred Racing Radio Shows

I listen to as many thoroughbred racing related radio shows as I can, and actually record the internet streams so that I can hear them at my leisure. I find them both enjoyable and informative. The following is the list of the shows I listen to on a regular basis. All are available on the internet. Most of these shows originate from the West Coast. I would be interested in hearing what other shows board members listen to.

Monday thru Friday

Raceday Las Vegas: 9:05AM - 10:00AM Pacific www.kshp.com Host Ralph Siraco. This is a well rounded show with daily updates on the Stations Casino Twin Quinella, Coast Casino's Tournaments, and racing news and previews from around the country. Handicappers Jon Lindo and Jerry J appear daily with selections from So. Cal and New York. The Tuesday show is dedicated to "Race Talk" with callers and Tuesday regular Don "Hee Haw" Alvey talking horses. This Monday thru Friday show is followed by the 1 hour Raceday Extra Today at the Sportsbook show from 10:05AM - 11:00AM Pacific. It's more slanted toward sports wagering, but there is plenty of horse talk as well. There are no archives available for Raceday Las Vegas

At the Races: 4:00PM - 7PM Eastern www.thoroughbredracingnetwork.com Host Steve Byk. An excellent show that features interviews with trainers, jockeys, writers, handicappers, etc. Steve Byk has a genuine love and enthusiasm for the game, which makes for great radio. His regular guests include Andy Serling, Seth Merrow, Steve Haskin, Bob Fox, Rich Eng, Johnny D, Jon White and Rick Hammerle. Stakes previews on Fridays and recaps on Mondays. 3 hours does not seem to be enough sometimes for this fast paced show. I highly recommend the Friday segments with Rick Hammerle, Racing Secretary at Del Mar and Santa Anita. He is on in the 6:00PM hour. Archives are usually available later in the evening, but are not always reliably uploaded.

Thoroughbred Connection: Fridays 5:00PM - 6:00PM Pacific www.worldtalkradio.com Host John Hernandez. An internet only show that features co-host Dick Harbin. They have some good guests, but not much handicapping. Last week, the show featured guests Mike Mitchell, who had 2 entered in the Pacific Classic and Junior Coffey, who had the favorite in the Longacres Mile. Archives are available for this show.

Weekends

At the Track: Saturday 7:00AM - 8:00AM Pacific www.knbr.com Host Sam Spear. This show based out of San Francisco has an emphasis on the 2 California circuits, but does cover the bigger races from around the country. Sam had on announcer Larry Colmus from Monmouth for a Haskell preview a couple of weeks ago. Regular guest handicappers featured are Professor Gordon Jones, Ellis Star, James Quinn, and local handicapper Larry Stumes. No archives are available for At the Track

Track Talk Las Vegas: Saturday and Sunday 7:30AM - 8:00AM Pacific www.klav1230am.com Host John Kelly. "The show that dares to keep score" is sponsored by Samstown Hotel and Gambling Hall in Las Vegas. Samstown handicappers Professor Gordon Jones and Patrick McQuiggan can be heard weekly analyzing big races from across the counrty. Each handicapper uses a $50 daily bankroll to make selections and they do keep score. The Professor is up over $1000, and McQuiggan is up over $500 for the year. They have several years running of being in the black with their selections. An entertaining and informative show. No archives are availabe for Track Talk.

The Roger Stein Show: Saturday and Sunday 8:00AM - 9:00AM Pacific www.830klaa.com Host Roger Stein. A hard hitting, no holds barred discussion of racing topics each weekend. Southern California trainer Roger Stein takes on TVG, the TOC(Thoroughbred Owners of California), the drug issues, and anything else in the news. He's had on some great guests recently, including trainers Mike Mitchell and Bob Baffert, jockeys Corey Nakatani and Alex Solis, and owners Maggi Moss and Bob Bone. Not a lot of handicapping, but great radio, especially when Roger rips TVG and "Teabag Todd Schmuck". Archives are availabe at www.rogerstein.com.

Inside Racing: Saturday and Sunday 8:00AM - 9:00AM Pacific www.racingjason.com Host Jason Levin. An informative hour that features regulars, handicapper Bruce Finkelstein, clocker Bruno De Julio and Thorograph's Alan Benowitz(spelling). They promote selling selections on the website and on 900 numbers, but there is some good information to be had. Archives are available later in the week at www.racingjason.com

Raceday Las Vegas: Saturday and Sunday 8:05AM - 9:00AM Pacific www.kshp.com Host Ralph Siraco. Same show as on the weekdays, but it comes on an hour earlier. No archives are available for this show.

Thoroughbred Los Angeles: Saturday and Sunday 9:00AM - 10:00AM Pacific www.830klaa.com Saturday Host Jay Privman Sunday Host Mike Wilman or Kurt Hoover. Both shows have the same name, but they have different hosts and differing content. The Saturday show hosted by Jay Privman is sponsered by Today's Racing Digest, and features handicappers from the Digest website, including Bob Ike, Jon Lindo, Toby Callet, and Lauren Stitch among others. They each give out a "Radio Play" while promoting the selling of selections on the website. The Sunday show has less of an emphasis on selling selections, and I really like hearing Mike Wilman and Kurt Hoover on the radio. Both are respected in So. California for their knowledge and experience. Thoroughbred LA immediately follows The Roger Stein Show on the same station. No archives are available for this show, although Jon Lindo has stated that they are trying to get a Podcast service working.

Race & Sports Radio: Saturday and Sunday 9:00AM - 10:00AM Pacific www.xxsportsradio.com Host Felix Taverna. A fast moving hour with So. California analysis provided by Larry Zap and Toby Turrell. Toby handles the Maiden races and Larry handles the rest of the card. One great thing about this show is that they aren't selling anything. I appreciate that. Both handicappers have a good handle on the So. Cal scene. Toby had a streak earlier in the year of 6 straight best bet winners given out on the show. Host Felix Taverna keeps the show moving, and usually has on John Lee from NYRA to preview the stakes action from New York. An excellent hour of radio. No archives are available for this show.

If anyone needs an archive of one of these shows, I usually hang on to them for a while. Just PM me. As I stated earlier, I record the shows myself so that I don't have to rely on unreliable or unavailable archives.

Thank You!!! I was just looking for all of this info last week, with no great luck (computer challenged). I understand that TVG and HRTV do not carry European races? Maybe this would be a good alternative. I can't tell you how much good information I get from you all here

Thanks for correcting that Point Given. At the Races is probably the best out of all them. I can't believe I messed up that link.

Bless you, cnoll. I'd just about thrown up my hands and quit listening, but your positive take inspires me to grow up (AL-most).

Does ATRAB require IE - cannot get anything to play, including archives, using FF.
