They're planning to create new multi-race pools to make up for the handle shortfall.

The out of state handle is down so bad in California this yr. it's almost unbelievable. Though they make more money ontrack and in state, it really shows nationally how uninterested bettors are about California.

Two things:

A. Last year, Zenyatta ran in the Santa Margarita, so it would make sense attendance and handle would be down from last year.

B. Today was Tampa Bay Derby day, a race that has become a key race for Derby horses, and as such would be given more attention by the betting public.

Also:
Handle per race at TAM- $912,484
Handle per race at SA- $1,033,630

Since you've got your calculator out.

Can you please do total handle / total purses paid?

Two things:

A. Yes, Zenyatta attracted about 10k extra onsite and attention nationwide and that explains some large fraction of the Year-to-Year at SA.

B. Last year's Tampa Bay Derby (already seen as a key Derby prep) was also the same day as the Santa Margarita. Last year's handle at TAM was $9,191,516, so they were up significantly.

Thanks. I think those numbers speaks volumes.

Tracks do not need to dole out fat purses for the bettors to respond.

Actually, Tampa's handle last year was around the same as this year....about 10.8 million.
