maybe because there is more money in thoroughbred rather than harness racing?? They do bet quite a lot of money for big tracks and even smaller ones too for the thoroughbred's. I think there are only a few racetracks that make a lot of money every night they race like Woodbine Mohawk Park (of course
), Yonkers and Meadowlands.
My local racetrack Grand River is lucky enough to make over $100k the entire night racing (Mohawk can make this in one race plus!!) so maybe they think there isn't a lot of money at these smaller tracks, plus with no spectators there is a small drop since most people only bet at the track and not online. Tracks like Clinton, Hanover, Sarnia, Dresden and Leamington are not worth opening since they are not available on most major betting sites (i'm surprised HPI puts on Hanover and Clinton on there).
I also think they are not doing any racing right now because if they opened up all of these racetracks (both breeds), there probably a more chance someone could get it, rather than right now there is 3-4 open across north americia, and all in different areas, which is better and more safer.
I just hope this thing is over at least before August so (we) all of us can enjoy something. I do miss harness racing as my 3YO could possibly win the N.A Cup or the Meadowlands Pace, I really hope they don't do some virtual bs race and pay out the winner to a horse who never had a chance at winning a big race like that.
