From the cited article "The business model does not reward a more informed readership or a more productive political dialogue — it rewards clicks and views, however they are generated". When cryptocurrency becomes common place and everyone with an internet account uses it regularly then I can see these social media sites charging a nominal fee.

Think about it. If a company could get a billion people to spend $1 per year as an annual fee and in return use a site with no ads I think people would jump all over it.

If the fee was paid by cryptocurrency there would be virtually no transaction fee for micro-transaction. There might be other ways for the company to accept payment without a micro-transaction transaction cost.
