Curious what people think about my Derby pace analysis, not a popular one from what I've seen post race. The gist of my take---why do we expect the leaders in the Derby to set unrealistic fractions?
|
As I posted earlier about your pre-race analysis, it pretty much aligned with mine. I had a feeling that, with so many early horses in the field, some of those early horses would not go out early, and doubted that a very fast pace would happen. Post-race I thought the pace was legitimate, not slow but not really fast, and that the main 4 or 5 contenders were much better than the rest. AP surprised me, Dortmund disappointed, and Firing Line ran just about how I thought he would.
So, in response to your question, I thought you did a great job pre-race!

This senario seems to happen more and more in the Derby - War Emblem's Derby win comes to mind.

In today's Belmont figures, in the 5th race, your early figure of 102 on the #1, Fortuitous Path (5 points higher than the ML favorite) was a fine gift, going off at 38-1, paying $79.50 to win with a $262. exacta.
... I hope you bet your own work. Either way, you did good, and I thank you and your team. It was a good day at the track.
