I've been living in Nevada 36 years and I've always wondered how Harry Reid became a millionaire on a Senator's salary. I could surmise though since there have been several questionable BLM land deals where BLM land has been rezoned for condos and the tortoises could just move if they didn't like it.

I'm sure he's as big a crook as any other politician but since he entered the Senate over 25 years ago his average salary has been in excess of $140K/yr. Add the perks like the 72% federal employee subsidy on health care insurance and other benefits the average citizen doesn't have and I think you'll find his overall non-discretionary expenses are lower on a percentage basis than most. If you can't generate a net worth over a million dollars after an annual salary of $141K for 26 years (that's over $3.6 million) then you're doing something wrong with your spending and/or investments.

I understand he's as slimy and corrupt as most politicians but the point was that you questioned whether someone in his salary range (and for so long) would be able to become a millionaire. I think the answer is clearly yes. Whatever he has accumulated beyond what seems reasonable is a separate issue, but basically I agree with you - he's a crook.


BTW, www.therichest.org lists his net worth at $2.6 million. OTOH they list Paul Ryan's net worth at $7.8 million. Where did a guy his age who has never had a real job get that kind of money?

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Troopers say Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been taken to the hospital in an ambulance after what appears to be a rear-end crash on an interstate through Las Vegas.

Nevada Highway Patrol Office spokesman Jeremie Elliott says he doesn't know Reid's condition after the crash, which happened about 1:10 p.m. Friday on Interstate 15.

The freeway runs parallel to the Las Vegas Strip.

Elliott says six vehicles were involved in the apparent chain-reaction crash, including two Las Vegas police vehicles, two civilian vehicle and two Capitol Police vehicles.

Hopefully he's okay and luckily, he apparently has more security to look after him and keep him safe than our ambassadors in Libya do.
