Just a few short years ago (2007) Mutts err Mets had a seven game lead with 17 to play. They finished out of the playoffs. This weekend in St Lou should be a biggie.

Note on Tommy John surg---In this years All Star game the combined staff's of the AL and NL had NINE (9) guys who had undergone "Tommy John". It does not mean "the end of career" for those that have it.

They're all over at River Downs.

When the Cards came to town and swept them about a month ago I figured the Reds would just fold their tent. Didn't happen. What a contrast between the ages of their starting pitchers compared to their relievers. Watching Gomes get ready to bat is a kick.

No team with Dusty Baker at the helm is ever safe. First round playoff loss, but better than was expected, so I guess that's something for the fans who stopped showing up.

JR--This weekend should go a long way in determining the NL Central. The Cards are in Atlanta a very tough place to win at. They somehow need to win 2 out of 3 vs the Braves. Why 2 out of 3? because the Reds are at home vs the dreadful Pirates. While Pitt is just bad at home they do at least compete. Earlier in the year they took 2 of 3 from Philly and now 2 of 3 from Atlanta. However on the road they are by FAR the worst team in MLB. So far this year 14-53 yeah that's right only 14 wins. With the Reds having a four game lead in the all important "lost" column, adding a few more games ahead seems a good bet. I would not be down on the Reds for losing four to the Rok's as Coors field is a very tough place to win at. Esp at this time of year. Still interesting in the NL but the AL is IMO over. Set with the Yanks, Rays, Twins and Rangers. It's just who wins the AL East.

JR---Watch the Reds game tonight as I predict there will be a fight in the Reds dugout. The fight will be among the regulars at the bat rack. They all want to hit leadoff tonight.

Reds up by 6 in the all important "lost" column with 15 to play. St Lou still has 17 to play. It's starting to look "lockish" for your Reds JR. They are now on the road to play the Astros a team who has been playing much better baseball. Win that series and I think it's all over. What a battle for NL wild card. Also for home field advantage thruout the playoffs.

1 Phillies 61 lost
2 Reds 64 lost
3 Giants 64 lost
4 Braves 64 lost
5 Padres 64 lost
6 Rok's 66 lost
7 Cards 70 lost

All over in the AL just who will have best record (Twins looking good there) and who wins AL East.

Reds may have their first losing month of the season. As a fan that worries me as they head to the playoffs.

They have some really tired arms right now, but I will be amazed if they win the division and just make it to the playoffs. With this group of young guys the future is bright. Bob Castellini and Walt Jockety have done a great job.
