Clement says Deterministic is unlikely for the Derby. Take it with a grain of salt, he hasn't spoken to the owners yet.

If they decide to run, Encino would need a new rider. Florent Geroux, who rode Encino to victory in the Lexington, is expected to ride Just a Touch, the Blue Grass runner-up for Cox, in the Kentucky Derby. Among the riders without a Derby mount as of Monday were Jose Ortiz, Javier Castellano, Frankie Dettori, and Julien Leparoux. Horses without confirmed riders include Honor Marie, Society Man, and Catalytic. It is expected, though not official, that Junior Alvarado will pick up the mount on Wood Memorial winner Resilience.

Not completely shocking after his odd trip and flop in the Arkansas Derby, but this is a horse that had 81 points and a guaranteed spot in the gate.

“He came out of it in good order, very sound, and ships back to Churchill Downs today. We still feel it’s in his best interest not to try a mile and a quarter in four and a half weeks.”

Cox said the decision was made Tuesday with owners WinStar Farm and Siena Farm.

Timberlake ranked fifth in points for the Kentucky Derby with 81. He won last year’s Grade 1 Champagne and launched his 3-year-old season in the Rebel. He is a winner of 3 of 7 starts and $1.1 million.

I like this decision of doing right for the horse.

Timberlake isn't in the Pat Day Mile even though he came out of the Arkansas Derby "very sound" & the trainer & owners are eager to cut him back to shorter distances because he has shown no aptitude for longer races having only won the Champagne & Rebel Stakes, races not known for producing major route horses.

Oh yeah,...the horse also hasn't worked since the Arkansas Derby a month ago even though he shipped right back to Churchill Downs after that race.

Also on the subject of the Pat Day Mile, where is Knightsbridge? A romping winner at Gulfstream; half brother to Speaker's Corner. He looked every bit as good as the West Coast's Nysos visually. I guess those Nyquist colts can't string very many races together...

Book'em Danno didn't show up either, despite this race being on the radar after his narrow defeat in the Saudi Derby.

That is because Cox has no idea what he is doing. Have you noticed how many of his horses are coming off of six month layoffs or longer recently. Why is that? You don't see that with Lukas horses! Has anyone heard from Speak Easy or Victory Avenue since the FOY scratches. Have they run and I missed it.

You should have seen some of those Lukas horses training in the mornings leading up to Preakness week back in the day. Whew.
