Juan Vazquez suspended by PA stewards
Quote:
Stewards in Pennsylvania have suspended the license of owner/trainer Juan Carlos Vazquez through Jan. 26, 2025 after the death of 5-year-old mare Shining Colors.
According to a ruling published July 7, Vazquez shipped Shining Colors from Belmont Park to Parx on Jan. 6 of this year. On Jan. 9, Shining Colors was euthanized with a severe case of laminitis. Stewards held a hearing into the matter on June 23.
After considering all testimony presented and the information and evidence submitted to the board of stewards by investigators of the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission, the board of stewards determine that owner/trainer Juan C. Vazquez was grossly negligent, cruel, and abusive in the shipping of the horse Shining Colors from Belmont Park to Parx Racing, read the ruling.

Good. And I doubt his license will be renewed when the time comes. He'll try to find a beard I'm sure.

The article noted that having the suspension run through the end of the license period means that he'd likely have to make a new application for license rather than a renewal - which apparently involves more hurdles.

Penn offers 3-year licenses, so he must have got his earlier this year. So the suspension is considerably longer than if he had to get re-licensed every year. That's a pretty clever hole card the Penn stewards have.

Program Trainer is the term used, not uncommon.

It is a terrible look. I'd bet anything NYRA would ban him if they thought they could do it legally, so I'm going to assume they don't think they can at this point in time.
